Innovation is vital to survival
Here are my ideas we need to make them a reality.
As artists we must accept the responsibility of working together to build a sustainable arts community in Hawaii.  It is a challenge but we are all in the same canoe and headed in the same direction........Let me know what you think we should do.

Contemporary Hawaiian Art Collectors' Foundation

Picture
The Contemporary Hawaiian Art Collectors' Foundation is aimed at both seasoned and new collectors of contemporary art in Hawaii, and will include an annual exhibition and offer symposiums/forums for collectors and artists. The Foundation will provide investment strategies and guidelines to its members and facilitate cultural development opportunities on a global scale.

The Foundation sees the role of the collector as pivotal in establishing a successful contemporary art scene in Hawaii. The Collectors' Foundation will offer a unique series of events tailored specifically for those private individuals and corporations wishing to become more involved with Hawaii's vibrant and growing art scene.

An annual two day conference will be held to discuss ways in which collectors and companies can actively work as patrons of contemporary Hawaiian art and recognize the benefits that this provides: both as an investment and in creating a strong Hawaiian identity. Hawaii with its rich cultural heritage and diverse arts community must grow and become part of the global community if it is to support the continuation of its unique cultural development and continue its 2,000 year old cultural evolution.

In addition to the inaugural conference, there will be several other dedicated Collectors'  events, including private dinners with prominent collectors and artists, a consultancy service to privately tour annual and special exhibits with independent art advisors, and exclusive viewings of various featured events.

Through my work with MAMO artists and through the creation of the Art Collectors' Foundation these combined efforts will enable artists to widen their local and international exposure and lead to a better understanding about the growth in the contemporary Hawaiian arts community. Whether it is private collectors wanting to play a more strategic role in helping art develop in Hawaii or non-profit initiatives that enable a broader range of people to participate in the arts scene in Hawaii and elsewhere, we are all helping to further enhance art appreciation and development in the Hawaii and the world.

The role that Hawaii's Art galleries and artists have played in the success of MAMO over the past six years demonstrates that the time is right to launch a large scale effort to develop a patronage and collectors foundation on a worldwide basis to support the continued evolution of Contemporary Hawaiian Art.  (2011-2012 Development time line)

A Place for Art

Picture
Hawaii is strategically located between the East and West and home to a diverse cultural environment.  Native Hawaiians have always welcomed visitors to the islands of Hawaii and many vistors have become residents and adopted the ways of the native people resulting in an evolution of a fine arts culture that is firmly based on Hawaiian culture, traditions and Hawaii's magical environment

The diversity of culture in Hawaii has resulted in a unique intellectual exchange among artists living and working in Hawaii with the understanding that Hawaii has a lot to offer the world.  By bringing together the Hawaii Avant-garde artists and creating a support mechanism in terms of a live, work and play environment we will recognize the value of this fine arts cultural resource and foster the continued evoloution of this cultural resource into the future.

The ArtStudio Hawaii, Inc. concept represents a new opportunity for artists to live, work and play.  It pushes the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo.  The ArtStudio is a development complex that will offer living accommodations to various levels of artists who are at a variety of income levels and showcases the cream of the crop of artistic achievement and offers visitors to Hawaii an opportunity to meet, learn and work with some of the finest artists world wide.  The facilties will include art studios, gallery spaces, commercial art support spaces, tool shop access, coop gallery facilities and will be linked to the Contemporary Arts Museum, Academy of Arts, Downtown Galleries and the University of Hawaii via partnership agreements it will become a vital part of the unique Hawaiian art scene made available to the world.

The ArtStudio Hawaii Development will be located in Honolulu, organized as a condominium development with requirements that only avant-garde fine artists can own a studio/condo and their patrons interest in the project additionally a higher end apartment offering could be available for patrons of the arts which would not contain a studio.  The development can involve the renovation of existing warehouse space but is must also create at least (number to be determined) units that allow for residential and/or artist live/work spaces. Additionally, ground-floor commercial spaces will be created for galleries, commercial, retail, restaurant, workshops and community spaces.  The project may include an affordable housing component to take advantage of any financing incentives. This project will advance Honolulu’s overall housing goals, it addresses the very specific and unique needs of the artist community, as we all know, artists play an important role in the health and vitality of the city by enlivening the neighborhoods and adding to the Hawaii’s creative capital. It recognizes that Hawaii is too small to support a development of this sort so it will have to be a world class development to target the global economy. (2012-1015)

Art Rentals - Compensating artist for their work

Picture
Contemporary Hawaiian Artists are a vital asset to Hawaii's business community and it is important to recognize their varied expressions.  The cost of these fine art works are growing as international patrons drive up the cost of the original art work.  The reality is that artists have costs to create their art and the prices will continue to rise and an alternative to enjoying the art locally without buying it is to rent the art from the artist.

Contemporary Hawaiian Art is not available from any one source and it is only available from the individual artists.   Contemporary Hawaiian art exhibitions are very successful at generating interest and support for Hawaiian Culture.  It is the intellectual expression of contemporary Hawaiian culture through the fine arts that adds to the mystique of Hawaiian culture.

Many companies and most organizations find it hard to justify capital investments for the purchase of original works of contemporary Hawaiian art. It ties up funds and it isn't tax-efficient.  Renting is a lot more economical and it allows clients to "try before they buy".
It’s easier on the pocket book and better than a bare spot on the wall. It’s not unusual for real estate developers to rent or lease paintings, sculpture and furniture to stage and sell their properties.  The benefit to the artist is that they are compensated for the use of their art.

The ability to stage or create art installations to meet a specific requirements of the client are vital to the selection of art work.  In many cases the space designers and artists must work together to achieve the magic or mana of the exhibition.  The installation design or hanging of the actual artworks are critical to insuring that a truly special space is created.  Each exhibition or installation is like a sand painting once it is created it has the power or mana and once the show is over the power is gone like a sand painting in the wind.

Some organizations may prefer to rotate art after a period of time without any short-term intention to buy it and tell the artist that they will benefit from exposure even though the real benefit is to enhance the business or organizations place of business.  Artists on the other hand often have difficulties selling their art because it is hard to find or get it in front of customers and the patron base is still developing and generally artists  shy away from business to focus on the creation of their art.
